What exactly does the “Leadership Expedition” look like?

What exactly does the Leadership Expedition involve?

There’s a video about this article on LinkedIn; here’s the link!

The Leadership Expedition is a game-based leadership simulation that uses a game board, card decks, role-playing, and immediate feedback.

At first glance, it resembles familiar board game formats. At second glance, it quickly becomes clear: This isn’t a traditional party game, but rather a training program for leadership, communication, and collaboration.

I developed the Leadership Expedition and have since run it several times with leadership teams. The focus is always on practical application: leadership is not just discussed, but actively put into practice.

How is the game material organized?

The game components consist of a large game board and various accompanying materials.

The game board is designed so that about eight people can comfortably sit around it. In addition, there are various card decks, assignments, case studies, reflection prompts, and other materials.

The format is intentionally comprehensive because it is designed to cover a variety of leadership situations, communication contexts, and areas of learning.

How do the card decks work?

The card decks introduce real-life cases, tasks, and prompts for reflection.

One example is communication cards featuring case studies. These cases are not merely read aloud or discussed in theory; instead, they are directly applied to real-life work situations and reenacted in the classroom.

This creates a practical learning opportunity: Participants don’t just talk about leadership; they actively lead in a simulated situation.

What role does feedback play?

Feedback is a central component of the Leadership Expedition. After a simulation, the participant receives direct feedback from the group and the facilitator. This involves observations, effects, possible alternatives, and specific ideas for improvement.

This creates a learning process that is directly linked to the behavior that has been experienced.

What are the different versions of the Leadership Expedition?

The Leadership Expedition is available in a leadership version (The Original) and a version focused on communication and collaboration (Communication & Cooperation).

The Original draws on key management concepts from business administration and focuses specifically on executive development and leadership training.

The “Communication and Cooperation” option focuses on communication, cooperation, and team building.

A deck of cards for lateral guidance and a game variation for self-reflection are in the works.

How can you make the most of the Leadership Expedition?

I currently lead the game sessions myself and also offer a certification course. Coaches, trainers, and executives can become certified so that they can later implement the Leadership Expedition themselves within their organizations. In addition, the game is a core element of my comprehensive coaching training program, COACHCRAFT.

More information about the training program and opportunities to try out the Leadership Expedition online or in person will be posted here soon.

Which version would be more interesting: “The Original” or “Communication and Cooperation”?
