Visions—Why a Dream Can Help You Become More Effective

A vision is a target image that aligns with the initiator’s expertise and value system, regardless of whether the vision comes from a single individual or an entire team. It is a “best-case” scenario, a “think big” image.

Those who lead through a vision contribute something of themselves. Otherwise, cold, impersonal goals are imbued with emotional substance. Above all, however, a vision brings all leadership activities into alignment, and thus leadership becomes powerful.

After all, as goal-setting research has already shown: once someone knows where they want to go, they engage—consciously or unconsciously—in “goal-shielding”: relevant stimuli are allowed through, while irrelevant ones are blocked out. The path to the goal becomes clearer, and opportunities are recognized.

A leader who is personally enthusiastic and committed, who expresses those convictions through their behavior, and who remains true to their own vision even when difficulties arise, is credible and serves as a good role model for employees. As a result, a visionary leader has a powerful motivational effect within the organization—one that is additive, or perhaps even multiplicative.

Maybe you should take some time—either on your own or with your team—and ask yourself or others, “What if…?”
