How Did the Leadership Expedition Come About?

The Leadership Expedition was developed over the course of about a year and a half. From the initial idea to today’s premium tool, it has been an intensive process involving many iterations, tests, decisions, and supporters behind the scenes. Especially when it comes to a format that will later be used professionally in executive development, coaching, and training, a good idea alone is not enough.

We need a viable concept, a clear visual language, legal safeguards, and feedback from the field.

What did the first prototype look like?
The first prototype started with a game board that my daughter designed. That’s how it all began. An idea turned into something tangible that could be put on the table, tested, and further developed. This first draft wasn’t the finished game yet, but it was the crucial starting point. From that moment on, it was clear: The Leadership Expedition was not meant to remain an abstract concept, but to become a practical tool.

How did the visual style of the Leadership Expedition come about?
Designer Anke Luckmann from Hamburg gave the game its modern, Scandinavian-inspired look. She has significantly enhanced the visual design of the Leadership Expedition and transformed the prototype into an aesthetically pleasing tool. It was important to me that the game not only functioned properly from a technical standpoint, but also looked high-quality and was enjoyable to use. The collaboration was very close and pleasant, with a keen sense of clarity, style, and practicality.

Why is the game called “Leadership Expedition”?
The name “Leadership Expedition” was chosen because the original name could not be used in a legally viable manner. At first, the game was called “Leadership Journey.” Since this term was already widely used in the market, a new name had to be found. With the help of my trademark attorney, “Leadership Expedition” was finally registered as a European trademark. The new name fits very well with the game’s core concept: leadership as a journey of discovery involving decisions, uncertainties, learning experiences, and personal growth.

What impact did the first few rounds of the game have?
The feedback from the first rounds of play has been instrumental in the game’s further development. The first few rounds of the game revealed what was already working well, which rules still needed to be refined, and where the game was particularly effective for participants.
This feedback was important for turning a good idea into a robust format for practical use.

What is the significance of the Leadership Expedition today?

Today, the Leadership Expedition is a key tool for leadership development and a cornerstone of COACHCRAFT.
It is the result of a year and a half of development work, a great deal of passion, and the support of many people. That is exactly how the original idea evolved into a professional tool that makes leadership something you can experience and reflect on.
