Giving coaching gift certificates as gifts… It can be a delicate matter. But it can also be exactly the right thing to do: People in your own circle sometimes clearly need a neutral sounding board to think through, for example, a career change or a difficult decision. You know them best and can easily tell whether they’d appreciate a coaching gift certificate.

Meaningful Gifts

I have to be completely honest and say that there’s one situation I always find particularly exciting: when a client who’s worked with me and appreciated their own coaching experience wants to encourage their partner, friend, or acquaintance to try coaching by giving them a coaching gift certificate. Because that can go down really badly with the recipient. “Hey, why don’t you just deal with your own problem!”

On the other hand, I find time and again that my clients have an incredibly keen insight into people. They’re very good at assessing the people around them and know exactly who they can offer—or even “expect”—to take on this challenge.

And on top of that, I’m delighted to see that coaching has become completely—and 100 percent—socially acceptable. Whereas 15 years ago, people would enter and leave my coaching practice sheepishly, with their collars turned up (so as not to be seen), now, at my office neighbor Torsten’s (couples therapy) and mine (individual coaching), there are sometimes whole groups of people in the waiting room—some coming in, others leaving—chatting cheerfully and as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

It’s great that coaching has finally caught on here in our country. And maybe a coaching gift certificate will end up under your Christmas tree—for someone in your circle of friends and family.

Like all other gifts, coaching gift certificates should also find their way under the tree in a mysterious way. They require discretion.
